statement of intent

Please write a paragraph about your piece.  Begin with a formal description: (height, width, depth) (materials used, not every  single material) (is it well-crafted? if not, how does the method of construction reinforce your sculpture?) (metaphors or layered meanings)

Watch your spelling and sentence structure.

I would say the height is about a foot, the width about half a foot, and the length about a foot as well. I started using chicken wire and then it became a mess of paper mache and ultimately was covered with nature that I found on walks with my dog. I think it is not very well-crafted, and honestly I would have to say that it all began with the armature structure, and the original wiring. From there everything became unbalanced and not as planned. I think for next time it will be especially important to think a bunch of steps ahead as far as construction goes. But for a first sculpture, I would say it could have been a lot worse.

The sculpture is approximately 8′ x 4′ x 1′ from the side view. The largest eel has a wire, thin wood pieces, and window blind armature. It is covered in various kinfs of plastics and tapes. It has a wooden base and is supported by metal dowels. This base is also covered in plastic. The smaller eels have a chicken wire armature and are covered in duct tape. The entire piece is constructed to be loose and have movement, so it shakes, but its structure is still sound. The whole sculpture has been spray painted a solid color for dramatic shadows and textures. The piece is lifted upward and all of the nine eels are oriented forward adding to the movement. The metaphor of a strong and fast body is depicted here. However, the messy textures show the feeble side of the eel. The sculpture gives a sense that the eels are trying to be something beautiful and classic but it just can not over power its rickety structure and sloppy textures.
