Which came first: the chicken, or the art?

Today in the dutch city of Nijmegen I visited Museum Het Valkhof and had the pleasure of delighting in the intersection of sculpture, video art, photography, glass-blowing, animal breeding, digital art, painting and the chicken in Belgian artist Koen Vanmechelen’s exhibition The Cosmopolitan Chicken. The project is a living (literally–cluck, cluck) metaphor for the consequences of globalizion in terms of culture and genetics. By cross-breeding chicken varieties from across the globe in order to arrive at a universal chicken, the artist explores the blurred lines between creation and destruction, growth and mutation, degeneration and diversification.

 

Plus it kind of reminds me of a certain family of two-headed opossums that has taken up residence in my bedroom…
